xp and vista to be connected

O

Ozgur

i am newbie for network business.
i had a desktop pc using xp and now i bought a laptop pc using vista.
i want to connect two computers to each other. i am using an ADSL router
which has 4 ports and I can connect to internet from both computers by just
plugging ethernet cables. but I can not connect to each other. I know that I
have to set-up something but ???
Even I can not ping the laptop from desktop pc. ( for vista, how it is
pinged? I can not find "run" in start menu ).

I run network setup wizard in xp, and it is finished but I think I couldn't
do it. Because I can not see desktop pc from laptop in "networks"
Can anybody help me ?
And please write clearly the steps. I don't understand so much from
networking.
Thanks a lot

Have a read of the above link re Vista File and Printer Sharing.
How to give Permissions are there, too.

1st thing to do is make sure that the Workgroup Name of ALL the computers is
the SAME.

In Vista Network and Sharing:

Network Discovery: ON (So it can see the other computers)

Network set to Private (Public is for hotspots, airports, etc)

File Sharing: ON

Public Folder Sharing: ON (Vista’s Public Folder is the same as XP’s Shared
Docs)

Password Protected: OFF (unless you want to set up identical usernames and
passwords on ALL computers in your Network) If you have it ON, you will be
asked for a username and password when you try to access a Vista computer
from an XP computer.

Also, run the XP’s Home Network File and Printer sharing Wizard.

And you will find tha Run option in Vista by >Start>Programs>Accessories>Run
