networking vista and xp

I have 3 computers: desktop running xp, laptop running xp, and laptop running
vista.

I set up my wireless network using the laptop and desktop running xp. When I
got my laptop running vista, I tried connecting to my network and here's what
I got:

Vista laptop will connect and transfer files wirelessly with the xp laptop
and connect to the internet wirelessly.

I can SEE my desktop on the map of wireless network connection on the vista
computer, but cannot select it/transfer files with it. Permissions are set to
allow transfers (unless there is something that I don't know about).

On the network map, it lists my vista laptop connecting to my router with
dotted lines (i assume this means wireless). My router then connects to the
internet using a solid line (wired). The router has another connection (down
from it) to what looks like the picture of a router, listed as "switch" and
then has a solid line pointing to my desktop.

When scrolling over the desktop it gives the IP address and MAC address but
will not allow me to click on it to connect, The same happens with the so
called "switch" except it just lists it as switch (unable to select it). I
only have the one LINKSYS router so I'm not sure what the switch is for.

My vista version is the premium, is this the problem? Someone please help!!!

It could be the permission issue. What do you receive if you do net use \\dektopipaddress in the Vista?

You could give us details about what you see when you "cannot select it/transfer
files with it", and when it "will not allow me to click on it". Right now, I'm
guessing name resolution.

You're most likely using broadcast name resolution, so you have an SMB problem.
