XP AND AOL 8.0+

P

PAULARENEEWALKER

I HAVE A HEWLETT PACKARD COMPUTER WITH WINDOWS ME HOME
EDITION. I INSTALLED WINDOWS XP AND THE INSTALLED AOL
8.0+ AND I CANNOT CONNECT TO THE INTERNET. IT KEEPS
SAYING THAT THE HOST HAS HUNG UP.

I HAVE WORKED AT THIS SEVERAL DIFFERENT WAYS. I HAVE
TRIED UNINSTALLING AOL COMPLETELY - I HAVE TRIED
RECONFIGURING THE MODEM. I HAVE TALKED TO AOL NOW AFTER
ABOUT 15 CALLS I AM TOLD THERE IS A COMPATABILITY ISSUE
WITH XPAND AOL

HAS ANYONE ELSE HAD THIS PROBLEM IS THERE A FIX

THANKS SO MUCH

Don't type in all capital letters. It's considered shouting and rude. It
is also very difficult to read.

I might have read your question and answered it, but as soon as I saw it, I
wrote this and didn't read any of it.

The AOL software is horribly written and always has been, but it isn't
particular incompatible with XP. You have other issues going on, but it
is hard to troubleshoot them with the little information you've
provided. Did you install XP drivers for the modem? Does the modem
respond to a query? Can you test the modem with Hyperterminal? If what
I've just said makes no sense, then do yourself a favor and have a
local computer repair person come and set you up properly. Otherwise,
post back with more information.

Good luck,

Malke

Since AOL is furnishing the service, their tech support should troubleshoot
the problem.

I suggest:
www.lenscrafters.com.

but, there is another solution,
it's called ammonia
spray some on your CRT,
wipe with clean paper towel...
repeat as nescessary...

The "fix" is to dump AOL and get a real ISP (Internet Service Provider) that
understands how to comply with RFCs (which includes anyone else other than
AOL). If you absolutely need the hand holding offered by AOL and/or its
content the dump AOL for your Internet connection, get a real ISP (for a
*lot* cheaper), and subscribe to AOL's BYOC (Bring Your Own Connection)
account. Then use the e-mail services of the real ISP (and not AOL's) and
you can still have the content from AOL if you cannot find it anywhere else.

Greetings --

I'm afraid you'll need to contact AOL's tech support for resolution
of problems with (or caused by) their product; Microsoft has no
control over AOL's product quality (or lack thereof).

Troubleshooting America Online in Windows XP

And it's not so much that WinXP is incompatible with AOL as it is
that AOL is an on-line content provider that ignores international
Internetworking standards in favor of its own proprietary products,
and has _deliberately_ made its connection software incompatible with
both WinXP's built-in firewall and WinXP's Internet Connection Sharing
feature. AOL's proprietary connection applet is deliberately designed
to preclude your setting/adjusting any of its properties, to include
enabling/disabling WinXP's ICF and ICS.
