xferring settings from old installation

I am trying to find a way to transfer settings from an old Windows XP
installation to a new one on the same disk. I had a motherboard and
system drive failure but I had backups of all the drives made using
Windows backup. I did a fresh install of XP in a different folder and
then restored my original system disk. I could not boot from the
original XP folder due to now having a different motherboard. So now
I have all my old settings in the old XP folder which I want to
transfer to my new XP installation. How can I tranfer them? I cannot
use FAST because the old installation will not boot.

I tried a repair install first but after the auto reboot I kept
getting an error that "lsass.exe" could not be found.

Your repair went wrong, I've never had any such problems, allthough such an
err can be down to a PC infection

I've had a problem with installation like that, it was caused by a tiny
scratch on the install CD so it couldn't read from it and said "such and
such a file cannot be found"

On the other point, have you tried using the transfer files and settings
wizard?

Sorry, I didn't quite take in that fact at first. You could try copying the
file - ntuser.dat - from your old profile to your new one in Administrator
account or by using the Recovery Console. You have to use a different user
account like Administrator or use Recovery Console to do this as the file is
always in use for that user. This should result in user settings such as
desktop metrics, wallpaper, theme colors and such being copied over. All
the machine settings will not be affected. However, be sure to back up your
current (ntuser.dat) file first.
