wow do I have problems - Error 1706 and different versions of exce

I have excel on my XP computer at work and 2000 at home. When I try to take
work home, my formulas don't work.

Also, I tried to download an update from the microsoft website and now I
can't even get my excel to work. It says error 1706. No valid source can be
found. I am scrambling to find my 2000 office CD but can't find it anywhere.

I am stupid? I am screwed? Should I just throw this dumb machine out the
window?

Any advice would be appreciated.
