Workstation service has not been started error

Hi,
I am having trouble in setting up advanced windows passwords (in run open
control userpasswords2 then on the advanced tab click advanced again and open
user folder). I am trying to change user memberships (ie. power user, guest,
debugger, admin) but when I click on the member of tab I get an error message
saying the workstation service has not been started and then closes that user
properties page.

I have verified using services.msc that there is no Workstation service
running or existent on my machine.

My question is are you supposed to have a workstation service.msc, could
someone check for me (who is not on a network prefferably)? Apart from that
what should I do to fix this issue? Any suggestions wanted.

Thank you,
Josh

The workstation service normally is running "auto" in WindowsXP Home. Try
running "C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs" which I just copied
from services.

Unfortunately the workstation service still was'nt running after trying to
run the program below. Although maybe this service is not active in XP Pro,
im not sure.

I tend to doubt that the workstation service not running is not the problem
alone since managing local users/groups should not care if the workstation
service is running or not though managing stored credentials might in XP
Pro. The workstation service allows you to access shares on other computers
and you should be able to enable it by making sure Client for Microsoft
Networks is installed and enabled on your network adapter by going to
Control Panel/network connections and looking in the properties of your
network adapter - this connection uses the following items where you should
be able to install Client for Microsoft Networks if you do not see it there.
I would also look in the system and application logs via Event Viewer to see
if any error/warnings are shown that may indicate other configuration
problems and be sure to scan your computer for viruses and spyware in both
regular and Safe Mode. You might also try managing users/groups in Safe Mode
to se if that works and if it does you have a startup/logon process that is
causing the problem which could indicate a problem with malware.--- Steve

I have checked my network adapter and the Client for microsoft networks is
not installed, in fact the only thing installed is Internet Protocol
(TCP/IP). I have now installed it though and I still have this error.
