word XP is driving me crasy

Hi
I have a long doc with different typo such as text in "italic" and "bold"
Now when I mark a pice of text which I want to be "bold" and press BOLD a lot of not
wanted things happens - not just that little marked pice of text becoming bold -
something like a lot of the text becoming bold.
How can I come around that ??
