Word (XP) "File being used by...would you like to ake a copy?"

Thank you to anyone who answered my previous thread which
I can't find again.

When I open a Word document, I get a prompt saying "This
file is being used by someone else, would you like to make
a copy?. Clicking 'Cancel' allows opening and editing of
the file. I am running XP on a laptop that is not
networked though am not sure if it once was.
Any clues would be much appreciated...
