Word XP/2002 freezes/won't open

Whenever we try to open Word XP, it stars but never opens. We had Office 2007
as a trial in tandem with Office XP, because the 2007 kept sporadically not
working, but just removed it and reloaded Office XP suite, again. All other
Office apps load with no problems, it's just Word. FYI: We are running
Windows Vista as our OS.

The "Microsoft Word XP" screen pops up, but no blank document screen opens.
It just freezes at the "Microsoft Word XP" screen. I removed Office XP and
purchased Office 2007 and now it freezes at the "Microsoft Word 2007" screen.
All other apps are working fine.

No change, Cindy. Still just the "Microsoft Office Word 2007" screen. It does
ask if I want to open Word up in "Safe Mode". I opened it in safe mode,
exited, and tried to re-enter and it just hangs on the "MOW07" screen.

Ok, I'll try to be more specific.

Initially, I go to Start->Programs->Microsoft Office-> Word 2007 select Word
2007 and the "Do you want to Open in Safe Mode" screen pops up. I select yes
and Word 2007 opens, but in safe mode you can't even open a new document or
select anything at all. Since I can't do anything, I close out. Now in the
past, while in safe mode, I have went to My Documents and attempted to open a
Document but nothing happens except the cursor changes like the computer is
working on opening Word again. After about ten minutes, I give up, and close
out of Word all together.

When I don't select "Safe Mode" the Microsoft Office Word 2007" display
screen opens and just stays there for as long as the computer remains on or
until we get tired of it and close out.
