Word pad

Does anyone else find the word pad extremely BAD? I had
windows 98, and everyone said I should "upgrade" to XP.
Well, I sure wish I had NOT. I can not use headers,
footers, put in lines, can not even access clip art! Does
anyone know how I can download the old, and MUCH better
word processing program on to my re-formatted computer?
I cannot work with this! The "help" centre is
frustrating and does not help me. I am so very upset that
I can no longer create professional and attractive
documents. Please help.
Thanks

You are confused. Wordpad has never had these features. If you were using a program on 98 then you need to install it on XP (as you did on 98).

Wordpad is a very very simple program and can't really be called a word
processor. I would also say that it can't be called "bad".

Since you might have liked it's previous versions better, perhaps you
should have stayed with what you had? I don't think it has changed that
much and it certinaly didn't handle clipart directly (although you can
copy/paste it in quite easily.

Get real word processor if you want that. Word, Word Perfect, or
OpenOffice (free from www.openoffice.org) are the the prime candidates.
There are more.

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

Whatever program you were using, it wasn't WordPad. You were using a
word processing program such as Word (Microsoft), WordPerfect (Corel),
WordPro (Lotus), or perhaps another. These programs are full-featured
and have the functionality you described, WordPad never had that level
of functionality.

I don't want to though any gas on this discussion BUT I have been using the WordPad listed under programs/accessories in WIndowsME. While many of the things the original posted discussed is not there the clip art capability definitely is. I've used it numberous times. The word pad contained in WindowsXp Professional DOES NOT have that capability. It does not list Microsoft Clip Gallery as one of the options. I thought on upgrades FUNCTION was not taken away. Certainly seems WindowsXP did.

Nothing was taken away, it works perfectly on my computer.

Install Microsoft Clip Gallery (which is NOT part of Windows AnyFlavor)
and the function will return. I believe the Clip Gallery is part of
MSFT Office.

First, I mean to say throw, not through. Second, I'll check this out. The XP computers I am using are in a class room (I'm teaching XP). I didn't do the installing BUT the fact that there is no Microsoft Clip Gallery option seems to support your point. I'll check the Word application capability and see if the gallery is there. If it is, then my question becomes "how do I install the gallery under WordPad if it is already in the system.

Thanks for your advice.

Just as trial, I opened WordPad and clicked the Insert
button then Object. A window opened with a long list of
object types; PDF files, Word pictures etc.

I have W XP Pro and Office installed.

And you'll only get those insert options if you have those related programs installed. Wordpad in itself, only will offer inserts that come with the basic installation of Windows sans any other office type products.

Tom, I'm not clear on what you are saying. Are you saying that if
Office is installed as well as the clip art that comes with it, that
Word Pad will not know about it? If that is what you are saying, how do
I get Word Pad to recognize that Microsoft's Clip Art Gallery is
available to it.

Word Pad will recognize the clip art BUT you should know that, if I
recall correctly, the clip art is not installed by default when Office
is installed.

IF you don't have Office installed, installing it should fix your
problem. If you DO have office installed you may have to start the
Office setup program and tell it you want to add/remove features (or
whatever the option is) and make sure the clip art is in place.

If Office is installed, you're probably not going to use Wordpad
anyway since Word would be available instead.

My earlier posting of the info below was not appended to this thread. I
think this one will be. Sorry for the double posting but I wanted to be
sure Jimmie saw my reply.

Teaching a 12 hour intro XP to a bunch of seniors doesn't require much
in-depth knowledge of the program. If they can get the concept of
windows, saving files, renaming, using the control panel, setting the
clock copy and move files, etc. I've done what I set out to do. I
didn't say in my post I was and "expert" like you seem to be. I used
the post to ask a basic give me some direction information. Fortunately
someone did (XS11E) and didn't take a superior position like you did.
Maybe when you get to be 72 like I am you'll have a little patience with
people.

Thanks for the snap shot. What you are showing is what I get under ME.
Not all these entries are there under XP, specifically the Microsoft
CLip Gallery. As noted by a number of helpful people, it may not have
been installed when Word was installed. I'll have to check that
tomorrow when I am in the class room. I'll see if I can insert a
picture in Word from the clip art gallery. If it doesn't appear then
I'll have the school's system people install it.

Thanks again to all the helpful people out there.

You should find it appear in the panel under Insert - Object in Wordpad
