Word opening very slow

Anyone know what factors would affect how slowly or quickly Word opens?

On my workstation, Word takes about 5 times longer to open than Excel. I do
not recall it taking so much more time say a year ago. Does Word check for
files in a default folder (e..g, MyDocuments) before it opens and would lots
of files there cause this problem? What other factors might cause Word to
open so much more slowly than Excel?
