Word frequently loses files

I am trying to use Word 2002 with XP Home SP2. However, every few days
I get the following error message:

Error 1706 Setup cannot find the required files. Check your connection
to the network or CD Rom drive. For other potential solutions to this
problem see Office10\1033\Setup.hlp

For a start there is no network involved. The Setup.hlp file is about
probkems when installing from a CD-ROM. However, there is no problem
with the installing. Word works fine for a few days, then back comes
this error message and it's a pain to get Word to shut down because
there is an open Input box. I have un-installed and re-installed
several times, always the same, a few days normal use, then it's
screwed up.

Any suggestions very much appreciated.
