Word Flashing no NAV enabled

Whenever I try to open files in Word 2000 from the File>open command the taskbar and the entire Word Box start flashing. They then stay flashing forever and the command is not executed. Taskmanager says that it's running, but eventually I have to shut it down. I can go to Explorer or My Documents and open the document from there and it works. I do not have NAV enabled for Office. I've run a virus scan and nothing showed up. I'm running Office 2000 Professional on Windows XP Home. I tried going back to a system restore point where it was working, but still get this. In addition, I get a Java Script Error when I try to open Excel. This is recent and the only change I've made to the system is to upgrade Adobe Acrobat to 6 Professional. I've checked the MS KB but the only articles I could find refer to NAV enabled plug-in.

The problem you have is usually caused by an errant add-in. Have you
installed the correct add-in for Acrobat? I think you'll find that the
correct add-in is pdfmakera.dot. It certainly was in Acrobat 5. Try removing
the add-in and see if the problem goes away.
