Word acting strange

Hi, in Tools>templates and add-ins, I have nothing
showing. I could not find officeav.dll. At this point,
when I open Word, it is rather slow, and after opening,
it pauses, then loads the ruler on top. In
winword.exe /a, it opens quickly and closes quickly. Any
further suggestions?

I still haven't found the problem. Let me review what it
is doing and what I have done. When I open Word 2002, it
opens slowly, then pauses until the top ruler loads. If I
click anything before this, it goes to Full Screen, may
freeze, before finally fully opening. If I wait, it then
works fine till I close, and it is slow again. It opens
quickly with winword.exe /a. I have tried deleting
normal.dot and the data registry key to no effect. I also
deleted my temp file files, including hidden files. I
have not found any add-ins listed by the methods
suggested. It sure seems like an add-in is doing this,
but I don't see any in Tools/add-ins or Com Add-ins.

Have you checked the *Office* Startup folder as well as Word's? Though if an
add-in were loading from there, you'd still see it in Tools | Templates and
Add-ins. I'm stumped.

Okay, I finally did it. I deleted the hidden files
(`$*.do?), and deleted my Windows temp file. Here is what
Word is now doing: it opens very slowly, and if I click
(file/open) before the hard drive finishes churning, it
crashes. If I am patient and wait, it works fine, but
remarkably slow opening and closing. No viruses, other
office programs are much faster. Any other thoughts on
what is going on? thanks.

The Word program files are badly organized. Opening Word requires
literally hundreds of disk operations. If something is causing disk
operations to be slow, Word will open slowly.

Some possible causes of slow disk operations include:

the disk is too full

terrible fragmentation

error correction being overused (possible disk failure coming)

Another possibility is a shortage of real memory causing excessive
paging.
