Word 2000 Protection

G

Guest

I have a Word 2000 document which I intend to circulate. I need to ensure
that the document can't be amended. I also need to ensure Word Styles on
other users pc's doesn't alter anything, because I know this can be an issue.

Will placing Protection on the document with a password do this for me.

Thank you in advance for any advice.

Hi Richard -

If it is _that_ critical, print & mail the hardcopies. Anything you do
digitally can be modified... Period.

IMHO, The 'most secure' option is to distribute the doc as a PDF, but you
need Acrobat to to provide any degree of security. Simply saving as pdf
won't do it.

Styles - make sure that the setting to update styles from template in Tools
Templates and Add-Ins is not checked. (This should never be left checked,
IMO.)

Protection - anything that can be read can be copied. Anything copied can be
modified. All you can do is make it more difficult.
A minor level of protection can be obtained by protecting for forms. A
higher level is to convert to pdf. Neither will stop someone who is
determined.

Even the hard copies are no protection against someone determined to cheat.
Only last month I had to restore a faxed copy of a contract document to an
'original' as the original was lost in the post and time was of the essence.
There was no visible difference between my rebuilt copy and the original.
