Document Protection

Whenever I start word the blank document that first appears is in a protected
state.
By protected I mean that I have to go to "Tools / Unprotect Document."

I cannot create new documents because whenever I click New document it is
already protected. What's worse is that I don't know the password!!

1) How does this "Protection" thing happen automatically?

2) Assuming I had the password, how would I undo the automatic nature of
this issue.

3) I promise not to let my toddler near my computer again!!!

It sounds like a protected document was saved over Normal.dotm. Deleting
Normal.dotm should resolve the problem--Word will automatically create a new
Normal.dotm.
