Won't Activate

I recently reformatted my laptop and used the internet to active it. It said
that it was activated but every time I turn on the computer it asks me to
activate it. I've tried to use the internet again it tells me that the
connection times out. I've tried to to do it by phone but it doesn't give me
the 6 number groups that I'm to use to get the activation code. I installed
Windows using my friend's cd because my laptop never came with one. I'm using
Windows XP Home edition.

And was your friend's CD the same TYPE in all respects as your installed
version of XP? I.e the CD would need to be an OEM version of XP.....

I'm pretty sure it is considering it said "Windows XP Home Edition" but if
there is something else thats different then I don't know.

That makes no difference.
If your computer is an OEM version, and your friend's is an OEM version, and
each of your computers is a different manufacturer, the disk won't work.

Does the system have a label, or "Certificate of Authority" attached to it
somewhere? If the Product key is on it, it' an OEM. The brand of the
computers in question will tell you the rest. Regular setup CD's from MS have
the certificate on the CD box.
