WMV - wrong program associated

T

Terry Pinnell

I've managed to fix the following problem, but for future reference
I'd be very interested to know how it arose please.

I had WMV files set to Open With WMP. But d-clicking a WMV was
consistently opening it in a program called MediaInfo. In case it's
relevant, the only registry references to that program are at these
keys:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App
Management\ARPCache\MediaInfo

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\MediaInfo

Anyway, when I looked under Folder Options|File Types|WMV all seemed
well. WMP was the associated program. But then I used Restore, and
looked at Advanced, and found the list of actions included one for
MediaInfo. Yet that was *not* the default. The default (bold) action
was Play WMP. I've now removed the MediaInfo entry, and WMP now comes
up OK.

Anyone have any idea what was going on there please?

Have a look at this

http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en

Probably installed for the extra codecs and not set up correctly. I
use k-lite codec pack which has a clear "make WMP default for
everything" setting.

Terry,

Clicking the "Restore" button is the thing which fixed the problem. Did you
happen to choose "MediaInfo" using Open with dialog (and ticked the "Always
open..." recently? If so, the setting overrides the central file association
settings.

Thanks Ramesh. Directly after clicking Restore, the list of actions
had WMP as the default. I *think* I then closed the dialog and tried
opening a WMV, which still incorrectly started MediaInfo. It was only
after removing MediaInfo from the actions that I regained correct
operation.

No. With WMP selected (first of the existing entries in the top
section), I consistently checked 'Always...'. But it persisted in
opening MediaInfo!
