I'm pretty new to encoding video (a few days) but already figgered out the
wmv kicks divx at low bitrates. wmv at 340 looks better than divx 5 at 780
and takes up half the space (and stays in sinc). I can get an episode of
NOVA in one 180 MB file, amazing. And it looks and sounds pretty damn good.
BTW, this is the same rate that MS recommends for streaming broadband video.
Seems to me it is now possible to have online TV stations that look as good
as regular TV in a medium sized window and from 8 feet away look nearly like
real TV, full screen.
Same goes for audio. A wma @64kbps sounds as good or better than an mp3
@128kbs and takes up half the space.
BTW, is there any sort of plug-in for Windows Media Encoder that can
schedule TV recording? The Winfast PVR software I have is ugly, drops frames
and can't pause while recording (I think it uses only the Windows Media 8
codec, wonder how I would change that to 9?). Maybe I'll try WinDVR.
