wmv converstions to avi

I'm hacked off at the fact that for the first time ever I
use windows movie maker in order to make my first ever
vcd. Only to find that the format it stores the movie
onto the CD is wmv and no option is given to convert this
to avi. Other than some later (probably more expensive)
panasonic dvd players no other dvd player recognises this
codec. Does anyone know what the simplest (hopefully
free) route i can take to convert this to avi format?
