WMV -> AVI

Jeff Lloyd

I saw the thread similar to the information that I have a question on, but
have my own specific issue as follows:

I have a WMV file that I have created that looks and sounds great. However,
when I try to encode it to a VCD using the DVD Builder in Roxio Creative CD
6, the sound comes out really distorted (skipping, etc.).

So I encoded the movie to DV-AVI in WMM (I'm using WMM v2), and then encode
it to a VCD, the picture is fine, but the sound sounds like you are in a tin
can. No more skipping, but it sounds just so cheap. It sounds that way
when I play the AVI file through Windows Media Player as well, so the issue
is not with the encoding process with Roxio CD6.

My question is, how can I simply get a good quality SOUNDING AVI file? The
video is decent, and I understand that the Video on a VCD is only as good as
a decent VCR. But the sound just stinks. I went to the pegasys site and
you basically have to buy an encoder, but I really don't want to do that
since I already bought Roxio's CD6.

Any insights greatly appreciated.

According to a number of recent reports here, if the camera records in 12-
bit audio, rather than 16 bit, it'll sound like crap when MM2 saves it.
It's got nothing to do with WMV or AVI or SVCD.

You might get better results by using a different capture utility that will
fix the sound as it captures it, but you probably can't fix it within MM2.

There's a free version of tmpgenc at www.tmpgenc.net. (MPEG2 support is
only free for a 30 day trial). But I don't think it's going to solve this
problem for you.

The audio I am taking from is not a capture source, but a 128bit MP3 music
file. So the source is sufficient I would think. Again, MM2 saves it to a
WMA formatted movie perfectly fine. Sound is perfect, and the video is good
too. But only when I save it to DV-DVI in MM2 is when I get the poor
quality.

Thanks for your reply, but I need something that will take a WMA file to a
quality AVI or MPEG. This software you recommend takes an existing AVI file
and converts it to MPEG. In order for me to get my WMA file to AVI, I have
to encode it from WMA to AVI with MM2 and that is the process that degrades
the sound so much.

Not true!!! TMPGenc CAN convert a WMV file (assuming that's the format
you meant, since WMA is audio only) to the mpeg1 (VCD) format. You
simply rename the .wmv extension to .asf and TMPGenc will accept that
as an input file. TMPGenc can also resample your audio to the VCD
standard. BTW, TMPGenc makes the best quality mpeg files of all the
encoders, and the mpeg1 version is free.
