WMP10 to run in background

After using WMP10 and closing the application, WMP10 continues to run in
the background, and can be seen by opening task manager > processes. This
happens most times, but occasionally "wmplayer.exe" will close down.
In any one session (day) I might use and close WMP 10 to 15 times, and
there are then 10-15 "wmplayer.exe" running as reported by task manager >
processes.
Why is this?
I have XP Pro SP2 with all the latest updates. I regularly use and keep
up to date Norton AV and Internet Security, SpyBot, Spyware Blaster, Bazooka
and Ad-Aware. All report no problems.
I did not boot up during the period 8 June to 13 Jul. On 13 Jul there
were about 5 Windows updates waiting which were then installed. It is only
after these updates that I noticed the above phenomena.
At this time I also started to experience problems with Outlook Express
freezing, and another program also continuing to operate in the background
similar to the WMP10 problem.
Any ideas or help very much appreciated.
Thanks.

Are you also running Nero on your PC? One of Nero's plugins causes
WMP10 to continue to play although it is shutdown. Check it out.

Thanks Byte for your reply.
Yes, I have Nero 6.3.1.20.
Nero has not been in use when the problem occurs, and mostly not used at
any time during that particular boot up session.
In Task Manager there are about 44 processes running. I cannot see any
process which might relate to Nero but I don't really know.
How can I determine if it is Nero causing the problem, and what can I
then do about that?
Thanks again for any help.

Go to: Start>Run>type MSCONFIG and press OK>Startup tab
Now see if anything relating to NERO is checked and uncheck it.
Apply>Close>reboot.

I had "NeroCheck" under the Startup tab, so I disabled it and rebooted.
Unfortunately this did not correct the multiple "wmplayer.exe" running as
reported by task manager.
I suppose if I open and close WMP enough times then all these .exe files
running will slow something down. Meanwhile all I can do is watch and see.
Thanks again for your interest and assistance.
