WMP and its desire to download a component or license from the net. Can this result in a problem fo

Sometimes when I download a media file (may be audio or it might be
video), when I try to play it in WMP (Current Version) it wants to
download a codec or license or even requires that some component of
WMP be upgraded in order to play.
My question is, can I run into problems by doing this? Could it allow
some kind of virus or Trojan lose on my system? Or could it allow the
place where I get the license from access to my system or WMP?

Maybe to many of you this would be akin to someone asking if they
could get a virus by reading a text file or some other generally known
question. However, to me, I don't understand what is involved with
letting WMP doing what it wants. If I were completely footloose with
my WMP could it be a problem?

Scoff at me if you will. I am not new to computers, but I've never
really messed with AV files to any significant degree. I felt that
some of the computer Gods here would be able to offer sage advice if
the urge took them.

Thank You,

Probably not possible. I would just make sure to have current
Windows updates. I always just deny the process whenever asked.
There are settings in Media Player relating to your question. Good
luck and have fun.
