"WMM cannot be used- required audio not found on your computer"

Well, as they say, when it rains it pours.

When I first dl'd WMM2, the only problem I had (and still
have) was not being about to preview my videos. Last
night, it kept freezing up, it wouldn't let me save a
video, and now I can't get in, period.

I'll start from the the beginning-

Last night, after WMM freezing up on me about a million
times, I finally finished my video and went to save it,
but after about 5 minutes of it staying on 0% and saying
that thousands of minutes were left, I got an error
message that said that I was low on memory or something
to that effect. I can't say exactly what the message
said, because I just gave up after that and now I can't
get back in.

Now everytime I try to open WMM2 it gives me the error
message: Windows Movie Maker cannot be used because the
required audio hardware cannot be found on your computer.

I'd appreciate any suggestions as to what I could do to
fix any of these problems.

Hi Again,

Right...The following is on the assumption that your sound card does not now
work at all. If it does work with other software then DO NOT FOLLOW THE 6
STEPS BELOW.

1) Click on "My Computer > Manage > Device Manager.
2) On the right hand side scroll down to Sound, Video and game controllers
and click on it.
3) Look for your sound card and right click it and select Uninstall
4) Allow the card to be fully uninstalled and then reboot the computer
5) After reboot and before you run any other programs you should get the
device manager prompt "New Hardware Found"
6) Follow that prompt through and re-install any necessary software
7) Run Movie Maker 2..all MAY now be well...so you can put the big hammer
away.

If the above does not work.
a) Get the big hammer and use it.....or....
b) Try re-installing Movie Maker 2

If (a) and (b) do not work.............
A) Go Get a BIGGER hammer
B) If you have any kind of DVD playing software then uninstall it vi START >
SETTINGS > Control Panel > Add Remove Programs
C) Un-install Windows Media Player (as far as it will let you.
D) By using Windows Update allow the re-install of Windows Media Player
E) Try Movie Maker 2....if it works THEN
F) Re-install DVD Player Software
G) Try Movie Maker...if it does not work remove DVD player and either
upgrade to latest version or purchase just the codecs from Software House's
web site.

If None of the above works or if it totally wrecks your system, My name is
Lord Lucan....find me if you can!!!

Heh. Well, I was able to remedy the audio problem so I'm
now able to access WMM. My other two hang-ups haven't
been resolved yet, sooo...any takers? Um, please? :D

Thanks for all of your help. I finally got WMM2 up and
running again, however...yes, however...I still have the
minor irritating problem of not actually being able to
save my movie. I don't think it's a WMM problem, though.

When I go to save the video, a Windows error message pops
up saying that I'm low on virtual memory and that's when
the Estimated Time of DL Completion (or whatever) begins
to skyrocket into the, oh, 300's or so (this would also
be the moment I begin to seriously consider putting to
use that hammer I've been hearing so much about).

I haven't had the chance to try to figure out how to
resolve this one, so that's what I'm about to do.
However, any ideas you are anyone else care to toss my
way would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much.

PapaJohn,

I've gone over the page and still nothing. I had to
update my QASF.DLL file version, but that didn't help me
out in the end.

Before I ran into this problem, I saved a few movies
without any hitches at all. They each took about 7-8
minutes to save, so it now saying that it's going to take
7-8 hours to save is, needless to say, a little
disconcerning.

I'm sure it's a memory problem, so I just need to figure
out how to expand my virtual memory and I'm sure I'll be
fine. Maybe...hopefully...perhaps.

Hi there,

Well, you maybe running out of disk space or your virtual memory is not set
to allow XP to choose the size needed or its both.

I always found it a good rule of thumb when working with databases to have
at least double the space available for the size of database. The reason
for that was because of temporary files that are made and sometimes
properly removed after a process was completed...so along those lines try
the following

1) Make sure that your Virtual memory is set so that XP decides how large it
should be.
2) Click on Start > Search > Files or Folders > All Files and Folders and
then type the following in the dialogue box [*.tmp;*.old;*.bak] Do not
include the [ ] and then click on Search
3) When the search is completed select and delete all of the files found
4) Go to your recycle bin and delete everything in it
5) Using Windows Explorer click on My Computer and make a note of the free
space on the target hard drive
6) Start up Movie Maker 2 and load the project giving you problems and go
through the steps to save the movie to file, at the appropriate point make a
note of the expected file size.
7) If Free space on hard drive is less than expected movie size then
obviously you are up a gum tree. If the available space (This is a guess) is
not double the expected file size then you may still be up a gum tree (but
at least you will be able to see the ground)
8) Obviously try to complete the save to file operation. If it fails then
worry not....just go get that big hammer!!!

If it fails and you have plenty of hard drive space and your virtual memory
is set to automatic, then....go to the dialogue box for your virtual memory
and (hard drive free space permitting) manually set the size to double its
current size and re-boot the machine...and then follow steps 5 through to 8
above. If it still fails make a note of the exact error message and let us
know.

HOW TO SET VIRTUAL MEMORY SIZE
=============================

1) Click on START > SETTINGS > SYSTEM
2) In the new dialogue box click on ADVANCED
3) In the PERFORMANCE Box click on SETTINGS
4) In PERFORMANCE SETTINGS click on ADVANCED
5) At the bottom of the dialogue you will see the Virtual memory option
6) Whether or not you are offered the option to reboot the machine after
making any changes here you should always reboot
