Im not sure if this is the correct area to post, but does XP know how to
choose the better connection or do you just need to be smart enough to
disbable wireless when plugged onto the LAN?

NO! XP would take the first it sees. There is not "balanced" networking in
XP.

As others have mentioned it depends on the speed of the connection. If
needed the default metric can be changed to force the desired connection. If
you are on a 10 Mb LAN and want to use the wired connection this may be
needed.

Yes you do need to be smart enough to know which is faster and robust.
Generally, Wireless is slower - upto 125 mb/s while wired can give you
upto 1000 mb/s.

Also, Wireless is subject to interference from environmental "noise"
while wired is shielded to some extent.

You haven't said anything about USB connection so I won't bore you
here!.

It is not a good idea to have two connections running in parallel. It
drains your resources and hackers have better chance of atacking you!

People talk about Pre-N technology but it is still relatively new.
