Wireless Notebook Optical mouse left click not working

Y

Yves Leclerc

I have a Wireless Notebook Optical Mouse. Even though I do not have a
laptop, I like the "feel" of this mouse. It is not my main mouse since it
is USB. I now can not seem to left click (standard click) with it. It
seems to work now and then. I do believe the left button contacts do not
seem to work. I only have it for less than one year so I find this a bit
disturbing that it no longer works. Besides contacting Microsoft, what can
I check to see what's wrong?

Also, I would like someone to post the link on how to contact Tech Support
for Hardware replacement.

PS: I am not using the Intellipoint software.

I have tried the Intellipoint software and a fresh battery. Still can not
use the left click (standard) buttun. It seem to be "non-functional" or
"defective".

Then second option it is... Time to replace it I suspect. Just for the
record, I've had bad equipment from all sorts of vendors. Right now, on one
PC, I'm dealing with a bunk drive, burnt out modem, and a fried onboard
NIC... And it was a rather pricey piece of equipment. So, by the same token,
I have an older Wireless IntelliMouse Explorer 2.0 that's been kicking about
for a while now. It's been dropped, lost, wet, etc... Maybe the next one
will be better?

Well, I will be trying the Microsoft Warranty dept to see what they will be
offering. The unit is not even a year old and the "micro" switch for the
left click (standard) is gone. I have other MS mice that are still working
however a few are "serial" connections. Apparently XP do not like these
type of mice connections.

You need a com port on the PC in order to connect a serial mouse. No
com port, no serial mouse. Simple as that.

I have the required COM ports and I have yet to get a stable serial mouse in
XP. Yet, on the same PC in Windows 98, the same mouse on the same Com port
is rock solid. Guess may be related to the way XP isolates the direct
hardware access.

What might I ask is a "stable serial mouse"? Either the bugger works
properly or it doesn't. If it doesn't work properly, what is it not
doing correctly? Drivers are the key difference between DOS and Windows.

Stable is where the clicks/movement all work as per the defined
configuration. On XP, the serial mouse was erratic at most of the times.
Buttons would not do their assigned tasks.

Well, there is no Warranty dept. Microsoft transferred me to the

button contacts do not seem to work. I only have it for less
than one year so I find this a bit disturbing that it no longer
works. Besides contacting Microsoft, what can I check to see
what's wrong? Also, I would like someone to post the link on how to
contact
Tech Support for Hardware replacement.

PS: I am not using the Intellipoint software.

First? Try using the software... Just an idea...

Second?

Then second option it is... Time to replace it I suspect. Just for
the record, I've had bad equipment from all sorts of vendors. Right
now, on one PC, I'm dealing with a bunk drive, burnt out modem, and
a fried onboard NIC... And it was a rather pricey piece of
equipment. So, by the same token, I have an older Wireless
IntelliMouse Explorer 2.0 that's been kicking about for a while
now. It's been dropped, lost, wet, etc... Maybe the next one will
be better? Galen

One of the oddest returns I ever did was for a non-functioning printer. They
had me cut the cord off it and send it back. I never did quite understand
that one.

They don't want the broken one, and the value of having you return it is
negative.

Well, there is no Warranty dept. Microsoft transferred me to the
Supplemental Parts dept. I was asked several questions (like my name,
address and unit part number.) They are sending me a new mouse directly at
no charge. Now this is where it gets funny. I do not have to return my
"defective" mouse.

Well, I will be trying the Microsoft Warranty dept to see what they will
be offering. The unit is not even a year old and the "micro" switch for
the left click (standard) is gone. I have other MS mice that are still
working however a few are "serial" connections. Apparently XP do not like
these type of mice connections.

I have tried the Intellipoint software and a fresh battery. Still
can not use the left click (standard) buttun. It seem to be
"non-functional" or "defective".

Basic proof of handling the defective unit. Think of it as a symbolic
return, and it saved them the shipping and disposal cost. Similar to
stores returning the front cover of unsold book as proof of destruction.

I know that but I thought that they needed proof that I owned one first. I
just needed to give them a part number, that's all.

In Bob I <[email protected]> had this to say:

I'll top post this time... It makes sense and surely saves on shipping and
handling fees which, assuming there's a lot of this, could likely add up to
quite a bit as well as disposal fees. I don't know anything about their
internal process but I'd wager that unless there's a lot of them coming back
that they're not willing to take them apart to find the cause of failure and
will simply accept that a defective unit made it off the assembly line. It
was still interesting with the coffee pot, I wonder if people actually
thought about keeping their old one and just sending in a random cord (or
replacing the one they cut with another one) to the factory? In this case it
was a fairly expensive Bunn coffee maker that tied into the water line so I
was pretty amazed that they didn't offer to fix it nor want the product to
be returned to them.

I'm back with my mouse "saga". I just finally received my replacement mouse
unit. Same model but I have less in the packaging (no huge warranty manual
nor Intellipoint CD.) I do not mind this. I took 7 days by regular post
mail (8 since the mail box could not accept the box.)
