Wireless Mouse Wheel Woes- Twitchy!!

I just got one of the new wirelsss Microsoft mice (the one with the side-rocking wheel), and I love it for desktop work, Word, etc

But..

Using the wheel is TERRIBLE! It's so sensitive and twitchy that when trying to game it's practcally useless. For example, I like to put the "Weapons Switch" function in FPS games like UT2k3 and Max Payne 2 on the Up/Down wheel. WIth my corded USB Optical mouse, every "click" on the wheel roll changes one weapon. But with the cordless USB mouse it changes like 6-8 weapons! I've seen this behavior when scrolling down web pages too- instead of a set ammount, it can scroll large amounts all at once

I've tried disabling "wheel acceleration" in the Mouseproperties and twiddling with settings, but nothing seems to help. Anyone e,se seen this or am I just doomed to have to keep a "game mouse" and a "Windows mouse" plugged in at all times???

Could be the wireless isn't compatible (slight delay in the signal) with the
game. Are there any settings among the game options which could be tweaked?

Someone in the Hardware forum said to try tweaking the (almost hidden) advanced sampling and buffer options for the mouse, while others think they saw mention of Windows Updates making this an issue. I'll try tweaking and seeing if I can smooth it out that way- I'm almost certain it's not a game thing, as things like "wheel sensitivity" isn't something you can adjust in such games by-and-large, and besides, I see the same error in IE and Mozilla as well, so I really think it's a mouse settings/driver issue.

Thanks guys! Great and helpful forum! =)

Another possibility and one I would examine before attempting any
driver and settings changes is the surface that you are using for that
mouse. Optical mice do not respond well to reflective surfaces, and
as a result, can exhibit a twitchy behaviour as you described it. :)

Don't bother replacing the drivers, or the mouse surface, or anything like
that. Your wheel has nothing to do with the surface. However, you might want
to change the speed of the wheel to 3 lines or less.

Be aware that the Tilt-wheel mouse was never designed to play games.
Although, Microsoft does publish some games, their bread and butter comes
from applications, which the mouse supports perfectly.

I ended up purchasing a Logitech MX700 to support both applications and
games, and I use the Tilt-wheel at work. I still use the Microsoft cordless
keyboard (with the tilt-wheel) with the Logitech. Perfect combination.

Now, if only Microsoft made the F-Lock key on by default....sigh...
