Hi

Why do you need to reformat your hard disk/partition? Yes, a 'wiping' will delete everything on the hard disk/partition.

The following article by MVP Michael Stevens will show you how to 'clean' install XP:

Not that it really matters, but I'd just like to throw in a couple
pennies... "wiping" is actually one step further than formatting, and as
such the two terms are not equivalent. AFAIK, formatting tends to leave
fragments of bits on the disk, and these fragments, while useless, take up
space. After multiple formats, these fragments tend to add up and take more
space. "Wiping" refers to writing all 0's or 1's to a drive to completely
get rid of these fragments of bits left by formatting.

Wiping or formatting the hard drive is safe, as long as you understand all
data on the drive will be lost. Make all necessary backups before you
decide to clean the hard drive. Once the drive has been cleared, simply
boot from the XP CD (make sure BIOS settings are set appropriately to allow
this), and it will allow you to created formatted partitions and install the
OS.

Boot to the CD and use it to delete your partition and recreate it again.
Then install XP. It will format automatically and install for you.
