WinXPPro sudden shutdown, now Windows won't load.

Hello,

I run 'Windows XP Professional SP2' on my laptop. I also have installed
'Norton
AntiVirus 2004 Professional', 'ZoneAlarm Professional', and 'SpyBot Search &
Destroy' <http://security.kolla.de/> in order to prevent viri, hackers and
alike.

I don't know if evil behaviour is the cause of this incident, but I was
running
VMware when suddenly with no warning the laptop shutdown.

I tried to boot up again, and a message appears saying:
====
We are sorry for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully.
A
recent hardware or software change might have caused this.

If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was
automatically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose Last Known
Good Configuration to revert to the most recent settings that worked.

If a previous startup attempt was interupted due to a power failure or
because
the Power or Reset button was pressed, or if you aren't sure what caused the
problem, choose Start Windows Normally.

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt

Last Known Good Configuration

Start Windows Normally
====

No matter what selection I make (including Command Prompt), windows shows
the
loading screen, and the suddenly without warning restarts every single time.

Does anyone know :
a) what may be the cause of this problem?
b) how to fix the issue?, or
c) what I should do or contact?

Thanks for your time. I appreciate any help possible.\

Tim;

I have no solution for your problem, and I hope that someone else can
help you solve what must be a frustrating problem.

I responded to ask if you would kindly not use "virii" in future posts.
It is not an acceptable form of the word virus. The correct usage would be
viruses. We should, as intelligent folk, try to "do the right thing" when
it comes to our language. English, as used in modern America, is under
enough of a threat without our contributing to it's decline.

I know it's a small matter, and if you disagree, I won't lose any sleep
over it. Just thought I would ask, as you seem to be a nice enough fellow.

No problem..

I actually thought I want using proper english - maybe the Australian
plural is different. But hey - it's an international world.

Is someone able to assist with my problem - so I can at least boot my
laptop. I know I should've backed-up this morning.

Hi:

Also my two cents - I forgot the name of the article or it's number, but you
definitely can find it from MS KB and try to search with something like
this - How to recover from corrupted registry files.

It is the last resort I used to use when I met your situation that seems
nothing else will work except for reformatting. But that one works without
reformat the hard disk in many cases.

Just one question, have you experienced any conflict from ZoneAlarm and
Anti-Virus 2004?

In my experience, I know there is conflict between NIS 2004 (Symantec) and
MacAfee Products. So although I have both, but I only installed one of them
in each of my system individually, but not both.

I have not seen conflicts between either of them with Search and Destroy
though.

Hope this will help.

I don't have any troubles with ZoneAlarm, Norton AntiVirus, or SpyBot
what so ever.. I actually think they're all great. When my ZA
registration expires I may try something else through, it just seems
that customizing the firewall can be a big hassle in ZA compare to others.

As for my booting problem, the laptop is currently in the Recovery
Console, as I followed the directions from the article 310396 [1] that
Nick forwarded me too.

[1] <http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;310396>

In the recovery console I got an error when typing 'dir' in the command
line:
"an error occurred during directory enumeration"

So, not I'm running 'CHKDSK /R', and if that works I'm backing up my
whole hard disk and then going the the manufacturer for a warrenty cliam
for a new hard disk.

Cheers

UPDATE::

Using 'CHKDSK /R' in the Recovery Console has fixed my issue.. for now!!

Thank you very very much for everyones help - especially those that
directed me to specific Microsoft Support Articles that provoked my
thinking and found a solution.
