WinXP SP2 Fails to install

WinXP Home Edition
Due to all the current flurry with IE Security problems I decided to bite
the bullet and update to SP2. Unfortunately after downloading 1.6Mb it
failed giving me the message: 'Updates were unable to be successfully
installed'.
Any ideas?

Quoted from Don Cottam
Microsoft Corporation, Software Update Services

"At 1.6mb there is a pause in the download while update.exe runs an
inventory to figure out exactly what files need to be downloaded, based on
the system configuration.
The delay for this inventory phase can be as little as 3 minutes, and as
great as 30 minutes (or more) on a slow machine.
Once inventory completes, download and installation will continue."

Thanks, but I'm aware of the 1.6mb pause which is where my download stalls.
I leave it sitting there and eventually I receive the message:
'Updates were unable to be successfully installed'!
I also visited the Newsgroups you mentioned and find that I'm not alone with
this problem although I've yet to see a solution.
That is why I posted here.

It is in the newsgroup but I'm not looking it up again. I think it says
something like the latest version of Alcohol120 is the problem. Uninstall it
and disable any virtual CD/DVD drives you have. You might have to uninstall
Daemon Tools too. But when I had that problem it came down to Alcohol120
being the culprit. The developers of Alcohol said they will fix the problem
with the next release or patch.

Also I downloaded the update then installed it from my PC.

Actually, the problem with Daemon Tools and Alcohol 120% is that they
lock up the atapi.sys file and stops the install of SP2. You will have
to completely uninstall these softare programs, not just disable
emulation. Most beta testers should be recieving their CD's about now
and it is also possible to download through windowsbeta.microsoft.com.
If you are simply testing as a consumer, check Microsoft's website for
the Technical Preview and you can download it as a network install. It
saves to the harddrive and you can install it from there instead of
using Windows Update ;)

Your right, I realized that after I sent the message. I always hit Send too
fast. But I had both problems. I got by the stalled update problem by
downloading the update and installing locally. With the atapi.sys problem I
uninstalled both Daemon and Alcohol and that fixed the problem.
