WinXP Updates Fail Install

T

Tecknomage

For some reason WinXP Updates are failing to _install_ 100% of the
time with the "these updates did not install" msg.

The download does take place OK, but installation fails.

BUT, if I use the manual method updating...

Update description "details" link -> KB article link in popup ->
download & run via the KB article links

....all updates install correctly.

It is only running WinXP Updates via the normal IE page that fails
install.

Any ideas?

In Start, Control Panel, Automatic Updates uncheck Automatic and check
"Notify me but don't automatically download or install". When notified
commence the process by selecting Start, Help and Support, Keep your
computer up-to-date with Windows Update and opt for a Custom install.
You will get a pop up but are not forced to respond.

Hope this helps.

I have Automatic Updates disabled, and I do use [Custom] in Win Updates.

Reminder, updates download but fail install if I use the normal IE or icon
method.

Only manual download + run Update install works.

Select, Start, Help and Support, Keep your Windows up- to-date with
Windows Update, Review your Update History and click on the Failed
Icon (if any) in the Status Column. What does it say?

Icon (if any) in the Status Column. What does it say?

Right at this moment there are no failures listed. Remember, I
installed the updates manually. But 2 updates that I did _before_ my
problem occurred ARE listed (successful).

But I note that the manually installed updates are NOT listed in
History (which I would expect) but a Win Update run does not list the
manually updated ones either (sees them installed).

The Updates History seems to list only those updates installed
successfully/failed that were done via the IE interface. A manual
install just removes the update from the "to do" list.

I also note that all the installed updates ARE listed in Add/Remove
Programs.

To reiterate, update INSTALLS are failing ONLY when using the IE
update interface.

By the way, I did submit this to MS Support via the Win Updates Help
link, including their system info scan. Still waiting an answer.

I suspect that a Registry entry got screwed or something is corrupted.
I did try a few of the fix "methods" from
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;822798&Product=winxp

None I've tried so far fix the problem.

Hope this helps.

Solved problem with Win Update not installing.

Had to re-register all the Win Update DLLs, via [Run] and these
commands:

regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wups2.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll

Now all I have to watch out for is just how did one or more of these
get unregistered in the fist place.

Thanks for all the replies by the way.
