WinXP Pro License Transfer

I am not sure if this is the correct place to post messages like this. If it is not, forgive me and please let me know the correct place for it. I would appreciate that

I currently own two copies of Windows XP Pro (Upgrade). I am planning on buying a laptop and would like the laptop to have WinXP Pro. I want to transfer 1 of the license over to the laptop and then remove the OS from my old computer. I will then install Windows 2003 Server SB Edition on the PC. I would like to know if I can legally do that? Any help and advise would be much appreciated.

If the XP Pro is a Retail copy, then absolutely no problem!

Yes, it is legal to do as you outlined.

That is perfectly legal as long as that laptop is
purchased with a operating system. Just purchase it with
xp home edition. If you are currently using both xop
upgrades, one will have to be removed from the machine it
is running on.

You can install windows 2003 server on any machine you
want as long as you have a legal copy. Now the operating
system on the old pc cannot be used on any other pc if it
was originally purchased with that machine. If it was
purchased seperately, then you put wherever you want.

Since your XP Professional copies are Upgrades, the y are not OEM
copies, and yes it's legal to do what you want.

Retail versions of Windows are licensed to the owner, and can be moved
from machine to machine as you see fit, provided only that they are
never installed on more than 1 machine at the same time.

OEM version licenses, such as those that come bundled with most new
computers, are permanently tied to the first computer that they are
installed on and cannot be legitimately transferred to another
computer under any circumstances.

Hope this clarifies the situation for you.

Good luck

No, all you would need is qualifying media.

As those are Upgrade copies they are under the retail license, which
allows you to transfer them freely as long as they are only on one
machine at any time. So remove from the present machine and install on
the new - When it comes to activation, if it is more than 120 days since
you last did it, you will find it will go through on the net just like
first time. If not, you will have to phone a toll-free number that will
be given, to explain and swap one long number for another to check back
as you type it in

Be wary though of laptops - some have highly proprietary software and
need a correspondingly customised version of the system. So I would
avoid a Compaq/HP machine in particular
