WinXP Limited Accounts and The Sims DE

N

nonamegiven

Does anyone know how to get The Sims Deluxe Ed. to run correctly under a
limited account on windows XP Pro SP1?

I have read a lot of suggestions here, and tried quite a few of them but
still seem to have the same problems. 1) createNewPerson fails when trying
to create a new family and 2) not able to change neighborhood.

If anyone has a way that is known to work, please post it. Emailing the
post to me as well if you don't mind. (e-mail address removed) (remove all
"m"s from this address - spam).

thanks,

In addition to Courtney's good advice.... :)

Some games will work with limited accounts after they have been installed and
run once either using an administrator account, or by temporarily changing the
limited user account(s) to an admin account in Control Panel / User Accounts,
just for the purpose of running the game the first time in order to be able to
install the necessary files and create the keys in the registry that it needs to
function, but may not be able to due to the restrictive nature of limited accounts.

If that mouthful doesn't resolve the issue, use the "Run As.." command instead:

1. Click Start / Control Panel / User Accounts / Create a New Account /
Name the Account: "able2play" (without quotes) / Next Pick: "Computer-
Administrator" & Click "Create Account";

2. Click on your new able2play account and Create a Password for it;

3. When your limited user wants to play a game that requires Administrator
privileges they can Right-Click the shortcut to that game / Click Run As... /
"The Following User": able2play and enter the password. Simple as that!

I know what you're thinking: That defeats the purpose of the limited user account.
To secure the "able2play" account so that it can't be used to logon to the computer:

What I do is add a shortcut to the windows logoff routine into the RUN key of the
able2play registry. I made a reg patch to simplify this process if you wish to use it:

4. Logon to the "able2play" account,

5. <ONLY RUN THIS PATCH USING THE "ABLE2PLAY" ACCOUNT>
Save this patch to your drive and then doubleclick it to install it to your registry.
http://www3.sympatico.ca/nibblesnbits/OnlyRunUsingAble2PlayAccount.reg

or

*Instead of using the reg patch, click Start / Run / regedt32 / browse to:
[HKCU\SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run] and
Click Edit / New / String value / ValueName: logoff / Value data: logoff

From now on, if anyone logs on with the "able2play" account, the computer will log
them off immediately. They will not gain access to an administrators desktop! :)

Thank you taking the time to help me.

I tried this awhile back but could not seem to convince it to remember that
the program was to be run with the privileged account/password in the
future. Am I missing something or does the privileged password have to be
entered each time? If the latter is the case then the kids only get to play
the game if I am around when they want to start it... so there is a slight
problem with this approach.

But it still is much better then having them run it while logged in to the
privileged account!

Thanks.

This is a very helpful post. I believe I ran across previous posts by you
giving parts of this workaround in my search of the group. Very helpful.
Thanks!

Disabling the ability to log into the account does much to address the
inherent security problems of this approach.. but it seems to me there is
still a huge hole. In this setup cant a limited user use the able2play
account/password to run any program? Wouldn't that pretty much present the
same security implications as allowing them to log in to the privilege
account? Hopefully I am just missing something here.. cause you did a lot
of work go disable the login and if I was correct it seems that would only
have minimal effect in securing the system.

Hoping to hear your view on this concern.

Hi nonamegiven,

Let the children know that you can and will log their
activities using Control Panel / Administrative Tools/
Local Security Policy. That will allow you to track
which programs they used and as which user.

Usually that's enough to scare them straight. Mind
you, if they don't respect your wishes, they shouldn't
have access to the CD ROM or Floppy drives as
those can be used to boot-up and access the hard
drive. Those can be locked down using a bios.

So the keywords here are accountability and trust. ;-)

Thanks..... This stuff is rapidly getting complicated.... a work around for
a work around for a.... sigh.

I am very disapointed with Windows XP and MS in this area. You would think
that at least the games from MS would use the OS from MS "correctly"... but
so far it seems MS games are just as bad as any one elses.... and if you
want your kids to be able to run games then you might as well not have
baught XP because you are going to have to give them full access to the
system... that is to say access to the adminatrator account....

What a rip off. As well as a waist of time. When you have to run XP like
this, it offers no better security than windows 95/98.

I guess I was expecting it to have caught up with UNIX by now. :(

Actually with most of the newer games written for the Windows XP platform
the installer routine is smart enough to ask "This user only or all users?"
and the administrator decides. Those companies which wrote games for the
previous operating systems didn't need to do that, and some of the gaming
companies aren't giving the users the advantage of the new technology.

I went ahead and tried your able2play suggestion for Microsofts Midtown
Madness 2. No joy.
Logging into my privileged account, the admin account, or the new privileged
able2play account and the game runs fine.

Logging onto any account (privileged or limited) and using the "run as..."
and selecting able2play... and the password will not work. After the splash
page and cdrom verification the screen goes black (as it should) and then
there is an "error" beep and things freeze. alt-tab reviles there is an
error dialog box. The error is DirectInputCreate failed...

I do not like having to use this type of insecure kluge... but I did expect
it to work. Sigh. How common is it that this kludge doesnt work? I have
only tried it once so it is 0 for 1... but it was an Microsoft game... but I
guess that doesnt matter... after all this game does not support Win XP or I
would not be having to try to work around it not functioning in a limited
account in the first place.

Windows (post 3.1) has never been a good gaming env. It looks like XP only
made things worse. Then again I guess microsoft isn't really after those of
us in the home market that want to keep control of our systems....sigh...
should have bought an xbox.

Hi noname,

This is the very first time that my solution hasn't worked.
Please try again if you think there's a chance a step may
have been skipped over or not completed properly.

Hello Jimmy S.

My name is Al ([email protected] - remove the four "m"'s to get my
email address).

If it makes you feel any better, MS tech support says this game is supposed
to work when run this way. Must be something funny about my system,
drivers, etc.... I am current (as of 1/1/04) on all drivers and os patches.

The DirectInputCreate() call that is failing seems like it is trying to set
up access for an input device. The only thing unusual on this system in
that area is I have a USB joystick (Thrustmaster cougar). I removed it and
configured the game to use a game port based steering wheel. Same result.
:(

By the way, I gave your workaround a try on the Sims DE game. It works for
that game.

This stuff should not be so (*&)*( difficult.

Hi noname,

I agree with you. I'm glad the solution worked with the other
game you tried it with. I was disappointed that my baby failed
on the first one. I think perhaps the registry or folders that the
game is installed to have excluded access somehow to the other
accounts. That's one possibility, and reinstalling could correct it.

Here's how to properly install or reinstall a game (and patch):

Step A: Temporarily disable Startup programs one at a time, starting with
Firewall, Antivirus & AdBlockers using this method:
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=331796 or this utility:
http://new.jtsoft2001.com/windows/startup.php Reboot, go to Step B.

Step B: In Control Panel / Add-Remove Programs, delete the game and then
the game's folder especially if you previously experienced problems
with a patch, or if you installed the Trial, Mods, NO CD patches, etc.

Note: Click Start to Search or Find your game. Many times there are two installs
of the same game on a system and the patch installs to the wrong one. Also if you
installed a Trial version of the game, this could be causing a conflict.. Uninstall it
and delete the folder.

Step C: Install and Run Regcleaner and if it finds any stray registry keys for the
game, delete them. Reboot your computer, and then re-install the game.
Regcleaner Download: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download460.html

Step D: Play a single player game, using an administrators account if necessary.

Step E: Download new game patches or mods in case the old ones are corrupt.
Double click the patch/mod to install it. If it's a .zip file, unzip it into the
game's folder and follow the instruction in it's readme.txt file.

Step F: Reboot your computer, verify that your game is working properly, and
re-enable any programs that you disabled using the method in Step A.

Cheers,
Jimmy S.

Thanks for the reinstall instructions. I knew most of it but there were a
couple of steps I would have missed.

I did some more testing today and things are more confusing now then before.
I have two non-limited accounts: administrator (ADMIN) and dad (DAD).

The game works fine when run in the normal way from either account.

If in the ADMIN account and run the game via "run as..." using the ADMIN
account then the game works.
If in the DAD account and run the game via "run as..." using the DAD account
then the game works.

If in the ADMIN account and run the game via "run as..." DAD then the
DirectInputCreate error occurs.
If in the DAD account and run the game via "run as..." ADMIN then the
DirectInputCreate error occurs.

This is down right weird!

Anyone seen this type of behavior before?

J

Jimmy S.

That's strange indeed. Since we're dealing with DirectInput with is a component
of DirectX, run the diagnostics program to see if any problems are found in the
Input Tab: Click Start / Run / type: dxdiag

Also: Download and install the complete DirectX 9.0b from:
http://download.microsoft.com/downl...-4c98-baf3-0c67e7f3751f/dx90update_redist.exe Using a Administrative
account.

*Antivirus / Firewalls can corrupt the download and installation,
it's highly recommended you disable them during this process.
