WinXP Home edition rebooting immediatly after login

I am currently baffled by a problem that has come up on my wife/daughter's computer. On power-up, the system goes through a complete POST, and Windows XP Home edition boots to the Welcome screen. When either of them selects their profile, Windoes XP Home indicates that it is loading their personal preferences, and then the whole system drops to a reboot.

However, we can log into the system in safe mode with networking, as administrator, without any problem!

Things I have done to diagnose and/or solve this problem:

1 - I have adjusted the WinXP video setting to turn off hardware acceleration.
2 - I have replaced the 256MB of memory in the system without changing the result.
3 - I ran fdisk /mbr, and re-formatted the installation partition.
4 - I re-imaged the partition from the clean Ghost image I took immediately after initial installation.

None of the above has corrected the problem either.

I have seen others post with this problem but have yet to find an answer. I am hoping that someone can help me out here. I thank you in advance for any assistance you might be able to offer.

Hey,
have you taken a look in system properties? (windows key + pause/break)
go to the advanced tab, and into the advanced options for "Startup and Recovery", and check if under system failure, an option to "automatically restart" is checked. If it is, try unchecking it and see if next time you reboot in normal mode it pops an error describing the failure, instead of rebooting each time.
hope that helps a little...

oh yeah. also forgot to mention that this activity is common to a few different viruses, so maybe if you can get booting, even into safe mode, run a virus scan and see if anything comes up.

Have you found a way to solve your problem? I am having
the exact same problem. How are you logging in as an
administrator, it won't even let me do that?
Good Luck.
