WinXP Hm won't upgrade WinME HELP!

I tried to upgrade WinME (originally installed by Dell) to WinXP Pro with
genuine MS upgrade disk. Message said it couldn't upgrade from a "trial"
version of Windows. MSKB article say this is caused by disk intended to
upgrade from Win2000. Dell send me a new OEM WinXP Hm with SP2 upgrade disk.
Now, when I try to install the upgrade (not clean install) from WinME, I get
the following msg:

"Windows XP Setup does not support upgrading from Microsoft Windows
Millennium to Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition. Setup cannot continue."

What is going on? My last call to Dell lasted 3+ hours, transferring me to
half the countries around the world, all for a disk that doesn't work. I
don't want to risk a clean install until I am convinced the disk will work.
Can someone please help me. I need ammunition to convince Dell they have
again sent me the wrong disk (unless it is impossible to upgrade from WinME)

you will need an install cd from a previous operating system such as win98
or winME.
a restore cd will not serve as a qualifying product.

i've heard that even a win95 cd will work

You'll need to purchase a "Retail Upgrade" version of
Windows XP Home Edition in order to "upgrade" over
an existing Windows ME installation. A Dell OEM
version of Windows XP Home Edition cannot be used
to upgrade...only a "clean install".

Thanks for the help. It seems my only choice is a clean install. There goes
the rest of my weekend.
