winword.exe error in Word 2000

When I open a *.doc document, Word I get the message "winword.exe has
generated an error. . . " I have removed Word using the installation CD, I
have followed all the instructions at link
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWordContent.htm to no avail.
I see an individual had the same problem in March, 2005 to which they did not
get a real solution. Is there anything anyone can suggest.

Interestingly enough, if I open the the document when Word is already
initiallized, the document opens, it's only when I want to open the document
directly that the problem arises.

I would like to see the error log that is generated, but can't find that
either.

I'm not sure if you have Word set to run at Start Up, but this is something
to consider--as being a part of the problem. This problem is more serious and
tedious to repair. Please state the current operating system being used to
run Word 2000, and Firewall product. (Norton has sometimes been known to
contribute to the problem, among other brands.) This would be a good time
to save/back-up a good registry, transfer and save all valuable documents, to
floppy, or other protected removable storage device. I would also like to
suggest that this question be re-submitted in the Office Developer section,
just to create more options. Otherwise professional technical assistance
might also have to be considered. Microsoft gives 5 tries for a flat fee, so
a detailed clear list of what has already been done, has to be carefully
reviewed, and noted. There is corrupted data (macros, hidden modules); that
might not necessarily be a virus, must be located, corrected or eliminated.
If possible, type out the full sentence of the specific error messages, and
be sure to share that in the Developer section. There are others here who
also might have something to offer.

If you get an error message which starts with: "Illegal Operation" please be
sure to mention, because it is also serious.

Back up all your files.

Get back to us if you can.

I am using Windows 2000 Professional. I only have Norton Antivirus in which
I also
disabled the Office Plugin. Could you also please tell me where the error
log is saved.

If you enter keyword: "errors" into Files and Folders (C:\ Drive) you should
find it there. Don't make it a case sensative search, and do NOT enter the
word: "log", because you'll get too much data to weed through. If that
doesn't work, check your Help files for more specific shortcuts, because it
depends on your administrative privelages, and specific configurations. Once
you get results, you might have to access a few files, but shouldn't be hard
to find. It's a text file, not .doc, .ini, or .html It should open in
Wordpad, by default.

So you do have Nortan afterall, (sighing) I suspect their tech support
charges, but some communication should be made with them. There may be cost
free workarounds at their site, I haven't dealt with Norton, in awhile.
Disabling Office Plugin may not be enough, leave it the way it is for now.
For the sake of collecting necessary data, and providing it to the right
professionals, I would suggest that you run a Thorough Scandisk; instead of
Standard, and in the advanced options, add a checkmark to "Create A Log". At
this point, you can opt to have Scandisk automatically fix errors, but that
does not mean that it will. This is going to take a long time, you might even
receive a prompt from Windows warning about the time. Just proceed. That log
can provide important information to whomever might be assisting you, in
finding resolution. If you are unable to locate the Scandisk log, a
Microsoft Certified Technician, can guide you through the Registry Editor to
locate it. At this point, I wouldn't make any drastic changes, because
hey--atleast you can still get to Desktop. Believe it or not, it can get
worse. I wish I had more to offer, but this is something that should be
handled by Microsoft, or other professional tech support, that you trust.
And in the Developer section, they might have other options, as advanced
users/programmers.

Depending on what you're willing to invest, and what data and files you want
saved, you might consider making a clean start. You can take your tower into
a local Microsoft Certified Technician, and for a nominal fee, they'll clean
it all out. Reload all your software for you, and wipe your Registry clean.
They might be cheaper than phone Tech Support, but I'm not sure. It's just an
option.

Hope it works out. : )

FWIW the Developer groups are geared towards programming/Office
automation questions - not application errors. The newsgroup for
application errors in Word is the Word Application Errors
(word.application.errors) newsgroup. But there really is no need to
repost the question there at this point. :)

Please post all follow-up questions to the newsgroup. Requests for
assistance by email can not be acknowledged.

Hi Charlotte,

Since the error it only occurs when you double-click a document then I
don't see an issue with the Word installation. I suspect the error
lies in one of two possibilities: the file association or a macro
error in your Normal.dot.

First, did you try recreating your Normal.dot as indicated by the
article? If not then try this first. When you open a document outside
the application a temporary macro is added to your Normal.dot. If the
macro can not be created due then an error such the one you describe
can occur.

If you have already recreated your Normal.dot then the problem could
lie in your file associations. The file association provides
instructions to your operating system and Word on how to open the
document. If the file association is corrupt then an error could
occur.

To recreate the file associations, exit Word and Outlook if using Word
as your email editor and recreate your file associations using the
following:

Go to Start/Run and run:

winword /r

Note the space before the forward slash. Word will not start but you
should notice some activity taking place as the file associations are
being recreated.

If you rule out both of the most common causes then let us know -
there's still other areas that can be investigated. :)

Please post all follow-up questions to the newsgroup. Requests for
assistance by email can not be acknowledged.

If Word is generating an application error then an error log file will
not be generated. Typically error logs are generated if the
installation of Office or an Office application occurs. If searching
for an error log the best search string to use is "*.log" (without the
quotes). Not all error logs contain the word "error" but they
typically have the .log file extension.

Also, since "charlotte" is able to start Word so I don't see where a
Scandisk is necessary. The error only occurs when opening a document
outside of the applications and that is typically caused by one of two
scenarios. For more information take a look at my reply in this
thread.

Additionally, I suspect if you stick around for awhile I believe
you'll find those that hang out around here are fairly savvy when it
comes to resolving Word application errors so I would say seeking paid
support at this time is unnecessary. :) Besides, where do you think
many of the paid support folks go to find answers and troubleshoot
issues? <grin>

The Microsoft Office MVP site has the resourceful information Beth offers, I
always thought there was a record of "error logs" for Microsoft Office, in
general. : ( Well, it looks like there are a number of options to choose
from here. Hope it works out.
