WinME to Win2K Pro Upgrade loses Wirless Card?

I have, among other boxes, a Gateway Solo 9300 laptop that had been
(very successfully) running under WinME. This laptop is an older model
with a Celeron processor and less than 256kb of memory. Not having read
(as I recently did in this group) that it wasn't possible to upgrade
WinME to Win2K Pro, I went ahead and did it anyway. There was only one
hitch. My Linksys Wireless-G Notebook Adapter no longer worked. The
Linksys people told me many, and varied, untruths about what the problem
might be. The last possible answer was that, since I hadn't uninstalled
the drivers for that card BEFORE I performed the upgrade, I was now out
of luck and would need to reformat, and reinstall a virgin copy of Win2K.

Gullible me did just that, never mind the aggravation of having to
re-install thirty to forty apps! With a new clean Win2K, I installed
the software for the Linksys Notebook adapter and it seemed to perform
flawlessly...Until I powered down the box and brought it back up again.
Now it would no longer initiate the adapter. With a little
experimentation, I discovered that if I brought the box up with the card
OUT of the slot, and THEN plugged it in, it would work just fine. Back
on the horn to the Linksys people. About five hours, and several
technicians later, the general feeling at Linksys is that the problem
lies with Microsoft and it's Win2K software. They cite that the fact
that the card worked just fine under WinME, on the same box, means that
there IS no hardware problem. A little short-sighted as far as I'm
concerned, however. They neglect to recall that THEY wrote the drivers
and card-utility programs.

Anyway (and thanks for listening this far) I'd like to know if anyone
knows of problems (and solutions) for the above situation. Works when
inserted AFTER boot up and WILL NOT WORK if the card is IN at boot time.
I've three more Gatewway Notebooks that I'd like to move up to Win2K
and I'd prefer to use the upgrade path and NOT the "wipe-it-all-away"
method!

As an aside, a Netgear 32 bit Buscard (WG511) works perfectly ALL the
time in this setup. Another work-around of course will be to junk the
Linksys cards and move to Netgear. Any and all help and/or advice will
be appreciated.

Thanks.
