Winmail.dat file instead of my attachment

HELP! Outlook-2002 is substituting a winmail.dat file for
my chosen attachment file (usually a MS-WORD file) and
sending it to my recipient. Naturally, the recipient can't
process it. If I ZIP the MS-WORD file before attaching it,
the winmail.dat file contains the .zip file, verbatim, and
my recipient can process it IF he renames the winmail.dat
file to winmail.zip & lets WinZip handle it. This problem
just started recently. How do I get Outlook to simply
attach the attachment & send it along?
Thanks --
