Winlogon.exe error after allowing remote access (even when not remote)

Hi, I have a Fujitsu-Siemens laptop running XP Pro SP2 plus all the
latest updates. The problem is that when I enable remote access via
(MyComputer→Propeties→Remote→Allow users to connectremotely…)
a) the remote access doesn't work, I get an error about logonrem.dll
and
b) even an ordinary, direct logon to the laptop produces winlogon
errors.

The following appears in the event log:

Faulting application winlogon.exe, version 0.0.0.0, faulting module
unknown, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x10001370.

However Disabling remote access doesn't seem to fix the problem. The
only thing that does is a system restore to a known good restore point.

Clicking on the Help and Support Centre option in the event logs
eventually gets me to the following KB article
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/828664/en-us which sounds promising,
but this a) talks about a service pack that I already have and b) goes
on about using the ldifde (which I don’t have) to fix a corruption.

So I’m a bit stuck, and grateful for any help.
Thanks,
Pete.

You might consider a "repair install" since you seem to have some serious
corruption issues. Note the warning on the page...
