Error 711: The Remote Access Service Manager Could not start

Windows 2000 failed to boot up recently, and I carried out
a repair. When I recovered I ran a virus check (AVG with
up todate database) but it was clean. Everything seems OK
except that I now have no Network or Dialup connections,
and cannot create any. As soon as I do I get the error:

Cannot load the Remote Access Connection Manager service
Error 711: The Remote Access Service Manager could not
start. Additional information is provided in the event log.

As soon as I try and access the event log, or try and load
up Dr Watson, I get a Script Error saying

Object doesn't support this property or method, with a
Line and char number, and an obscure URL, and asking if I
wish to continue running scripts. Whether I say Y or N,
nothing happens.

I know the obvious answer is to reinstall WIndows, but
because it is such a pain to do this, and reinstall
everything else, I wonder if anyone knows an easier fix.

Your help is greatly appreciated
