Is that during the update procedure or once they have completed ?

Hmmm! Ponder Ponder....

Are you installing the updates using the Administrator account?

Is there a backup of Winlogon.exe in the System32/dllcache folder?

More Information Please.

What Service Pack do you currently have installed ?

Tried both on my own account, then as Administrator, both crash.
Cannot locate a System32/dllcache folder, including by searching in the root
directory and all subfolders for dllcache*.*
A search from the root for *winlogon.exe found four copies in the following
folders:
C:\4f442ed8ea2cc3d5f8c7327716af465f
C:\b3d01968f4502
C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32
The first two directories also contain \update\sp4.cat -- I think these are
copies of Service Pack 4 that dl'd but failed to install.
Is there a way to determine whether any of the Service Packs have
successfully installed?

Cannot locate a System32/dllcache folder

C:\WINNT\system32\dllcache

Please post the exact content of your error message.

In fact if you are missing the dllcache folder this is possibly the
source to your troubles. MEANING that the updates are trying to write new
files to the dllcache folder. Just another hunch!

To determine what SP you have see the System Properties: Control Panel>
SYSTEM - if it has installed correctly is another matter.

I have MS WY2K Professional
Service Pack 1 installed

I get 2 different error messages; had to repeat the errors several times as
they're on screen only a fraction of a second before the reboot. I can
detect no pattern when one message appears rather than the other. They are:

"WINLOGIN.EXE has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will
need to restart the program." There is a CANCEL button, but I never have
time to push it.

- or -

"WINLOGIN.EXE has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. An error
log is being created." Again, with the CANCEL button.

Almost forgot about this one.

WRONG! You don't need a previous service pack to install the latest one, at
least according to Microsoft. I just installed SP4 on a laptop with SP1, so
it's at least partially true. :)

Okay. . . .turned off the firewall, turned of the Norton anti-virus, started
dling SP3, immediately got blaster worm, a few hours later SP3 finished
dling, started to install, crashed the system. . . .I rebooted, did a full
virus scan, got rid of blaster, tried to install SP3, got the same old
WINLOGON error and reboot. . . .

Are we all out of ideas?
