Windows XP won't shut down ...

This has happened on my 2-year-old desk top and my 1-year-old lap top at
various times. I'll shut them down in the evening only to find the next AM
that one of the monitors says: " windows is shutting down". I then have to
use the power button to get back in which I'm told is a no-no. Any ideas on
the cause and how to fix is greatly appreciated.
