Windows XP upgrade

I am up grading several pcs from Windows 98 2nd ed to
windows XP Pro. So far I have upgraded 1 successfully, it
was a 400 mhz Celeron with 128 MB of Ram. Two other
workstations gave me a blue screen error message "setup
can't continue becauser drive c: is corrupt." At that
point everything is lost and I can't get back to Windows
98. What is wrong what can I do to get the up grade going?

My 2 cent, it's better to do a clean installation of windows xp. The
drivers/hardware that is installed might not be compatible with XP. Also,
400Mhz is barely able to run XP. Keeping them at win98 would be a better
choice.

Did you run the Upgrade Advisor first? It is a really Good Idea. Here's
the link:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/howtobuy/upgrading/advisor.asp

If it's too late, then here's more information:

There are two ways of installing XP - a clean install where the hard
drive is formatted first and an upgrade install where the new operating
system is installed "on top" of the old operating system. If you are
doing the latter, try a clean install instead. Formatting the drive
will wipe all current data, so you would expect to reinstall programs
from cd and restore data from backups. If you are already doing a clean
install and the installation is failing, you probably have bad
hardware. Start with a RAM test - I like Memtest86 from
www.memtest86.com - and let the test run for an extended time, like
overnight (unless you get errors immediately). If the RAM is good, then
run a hard drive diagnostic utility, which you can get from the drive
mftr.'s website.

Greetings --

Have you made sure that your PC's hardware components are capable
of supporting WinXP? This information will be found at the PC's
manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Hardware Compatibility
List: (http://www.microsoft.com/hcl/default.asp) Additionally, run
Microsoft WinXP Upgrade Advisor to see if you have any incompatible
hardware components or applications.

You should, before proceeding, take a few minutes to ensure that
there are WinXP device drivers available for all of the machine's
components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed for
Win98/Me. Also bear in mind that PCs designed for, sold and run fine
with Win9x/Me very often do not meet WinXP's much more stringent
hardware quality requirements. This is particularly true of many
models in Compaq's consumer-class Presario product line or HP's
consumer-class Pavilion product line. WinXP, like WinNT and Win2K
before it, is quite sensitive to borderline defective hardware
(particularly motherboards, RAM and hard drives) that will still
support Win9x.
