Windows XP update from another OS

R

Hi,

I have two computers. I can only connect one of them to the Internet. The OS
on that one is 98. The problem is that I need to download Windows updates
for the other computer, which has XP installed.
=> Is there a way I can use the 98 machine to download XP updates? I don't
need it to check which updates the XP machine needs- I don't mind just
downloading everything that's available.

Thanks,
Karen.
In Windows Update, click on Customise (in the LH pane) and choose "Show
Windows Update catalog". Click in Windows Update Catalog and you can
then choose your updates to download and the folder in which to save
them

Please don't listen to the 2 other morons who replied to your post.

Set up 'internet connection sharing' on your windows 98 computer.

You can see how to do this here: http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/ics_98

If you don't have Windows 98 SR2, then you can't do that.

I would suggest temporarily connecting your Windows XP computer to the
internet to do the updates.

And which two "morons" might that be?

Well, one thing, if the XP desktop does not have internet
access, the ciritcal security update really are not need.
no one can attack u if you are not on a network/internet.
the simple answer is though, that no there is on easy way
to do that.

Actually it is very easy.
Go to the Windows update website on the 98 machine.
In the left hand column, select "Personalize Windows Update".
In the right hand pane, check the box to display the windows Update catalog
and then save the settings.

In the left hand pane you will now have a link to the Update catalog. By
going there you can search for updates for XP and download and save them.
Of course, you will need to get them over to the XP machine,
but if you have a CD burner in the 98 machine that would be easy.

how about if he installs software that requires certain service packs? have
you not seen this before with office 2000 on windows nt, and in several
other cases. microsoft don't release operating systems that are fault-free,
and you may not notice these faults until a later date.
updating your operating system is highly reccomended by experts in this
industry, INCLUDING microsoft, even if you machine is not connected to the
internet.

i can't imagine why you would reccoment NOT to install windows updates.
they aren't ALL about security risks, a lot are about faults and updates to
ensure the most up to date software will run correctly on your computer.

It all kind of depends in what you want to do.
Internet Connection Sharing is one good option.
Personally, in your situation, I would just ensure
that you are running Windows XP SP1. That's enough for the
moment as long as your XP machine isn't connected to the
web. For further updates, just wait until SP2 is released.

Then that would be would be a compelling reason to update. But that was
not the question; nor was it even hinted-at by Karen.

I did not say do not update. I said do not update unless there is a
problem on the computer known to be fixed by an update. If the computer
is working and serving its purpose, then let it alone and let it
continue to serve its purpose.

It is not required to have newer software to continue serving a purpose
which works. I agree some believe so, including some experts. Some
experts think differently. I think differently, and that's my prerogative.

Thanks!
The problem is that when I go to that link I am redirected to the following
URL:
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/Static_Locale/V31site/
and then none of the personalization options appear.
(Rob is right- I don't want to connect the XP machine to the Internet. But I
do want the option to update it if the user wants to).
Thanks again,
Karen.

Go to this Microsoft site and download the XP updates to the computer
connected to the internet. You can then burn them to a cd or transfer them
to the XP computer over a network connection.

Karen,

Out of curiosity and to provide an independant test for you, I tried the
link to http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp?corporate=true
with a Windows 98 machine (IE 6.0) and it seem to work. It built a long
folder tree along with a link back to the documentation on the web about
the update.

I downloaded one update file ... but of course did not try to install on
98, nor did I try to move the file to an XP machine to install. But on
the surface, doesn't look like there is any reason this won't work.

This site provides updates for all versions of Windows. I use it to obtain
updates for friends who do not have broadband connections. I download the
updates and put them on cd-r's. My friends can then install the updates from
the cd's.
