Windows XP stalls when booting

Hi, Im hoping someone can help.

I tried to switch on my computer today and it didnt boot
to win xp as usual, an error screen flashed up but I did
not have time to write down the error. It then showed a
blue screen on the monitor. I restarted the computer, at
which point it loaded to a page saying that Windows had
not started successfully and that a recent hardware or
software change may be the cause. It also gave me the
option of starting in safe mode or reverting to last
known good configuration and two other options. I have
tried all these and usually the Winxp logo will flash up
as it usually does when loading but the scroll bar which
dashes along the bottom stalls at some point and so does
the computer. I did get another blue screen coming up
which said to check if any new hardware or software had
been installed incorrectly (but how can I do this??) and
also that if the problem continues to disable newly
installed hardware or software (nothing has been newly
installed as far as I know, apart from virus protection).
It also says to disable bios memory options such as
caching or shadowing (how do I do this??)

technical information is given as
STOP:0X0000000A (0X000000012, 0X00000002, 0X00000001,
0X80500AD6)

I AM AT A LOSS...please help if you know what is wrong!!

thanks John

ok firstly go into safe mode with command prompt this should get you in, when
the command prompt comes up type in start windows and windows should start
and give you an option to start in safe mode or use system restore, you may
want to use system restore.

i dont know much about error codes myself but this should help.
