Windows XP - SP2 never installed - next step?

A friend never installed SP2. What steps should she take (after making
sure the computer is "clean" and taking a restore Point)?
1) Just run Windows Update and let it install what is missing?
2) Install SP2 from the Microsoft SP2 CD, then run Windows Update?
3) Start by finding the potentially missing SP1 updates, if so how?
4) Other suggestions

Waste of time. SP2 includes all SP1.

4) Other suggestions

Install SP2 with only the essential components present. These are the
monitor, the keyboard, the mouse, the CD, and the disk which contains
Windows. Disconnect all others.
Be absolutely certain that the PC is ready for SP2 before proceeding.
After the installation is complete, reconnect to the internet after you have
restarted the malware products.
The go to Windows Update and get the updates since SP2.

Reconnect all of the devices, and if you have done your homework correctly,
all will be well. I spent 2 hours on this task.

Your suggestions make sense. However, I am not sure what you mean by
"after you have restarted the malware products."

The first step will be to ensure the computer is clean.

Is this a simple typo and you mean after having reconnected all the
hardware?
Or???
