Windows XP SP2 Firewall

D

Dock

I have installed SP2 on a Windows XP Home machine, but am unable to
turn the firewall on. When I try to run it from the security window,
it says it cannot turn on Internet Connection Sharing. When I run
SERVICES.MSC, and try to turn the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection
Sharing on, I get the following error message:

Error 123: The file name, directory name or volume label syntax is
incorrect.

In looking at the "Path to executable:" window, sure enough, it says:

\SystemRoot\C:\WINNT\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs

which is exactly what it should say, except for the \SystemRoot\
entry, which I assume is what is causing the firewall not to start.
Unfortunately, I can find no way to edit that window to take out the
offending entry. Anyone know how to correct this problem? Thanks.

You only need to find that path with regedit in the registry and
correct it deleting the "\systemroot\" in every single key you find it

Don't follow the advice below, rather change all of those \SystemRoot\
entries to %Systemroot%\

otherwise you'll end up with error 3: The system cannot find path specified

Hope that helps. I know that hint below was enough to get me on the right
track.
