Windows XP Professional installer file

W

Willie Neubert

The C:\windows\installer file has grown to 10gigabytes and I need to clean
this to get more room. My system auto update keeps trying to install a patch
and fails. each time it writes more to the installer file.

That's a tumor, not a folder <g> What's the installed antivirus\security
suite, Willie ?

Unless you've been constantly installing/uninstalling programs, there's
no way that subfolder should be that size. Messing with the Installer
subfolder is *not* recommended unless you'd care to uninstall everything
that's installed now first.

* Which update is writing to this subfolder when it fails to install ? *

After another attempt at installing it, check the WindowsUpdate.log
Start > Run > type in or copy&pste the below into the Open: line and
then click OK or press Enter

%windir%\windowsupdate.log

Scroll all the way to the bottom for the most recent entries and then
copy & paste the last 50 or so lines into your reply, please.
Look for FATAL and WARNING entries.

Is Office 2003 Service Pack 3 (SP3) the update that continually attempts
to install, Willie ? Since the snippet of the WU.log shows only that,
one assumes that's the problematic update. But, it was regulated and
just downloaded, according to the log, so it may not be the update that
repeatedly offers to install.

It's scheduled install time is tonight at 6 PM, your time.
Ensure the system is on at 6, disconnect it from it's network/net
connection, and then *temporarily and completely* disable the installed
antivirus/security software.

After the installation or installation attempt, *reenable the installed
AV/security suite* prior to reconnecting the system.

Reboot now.
Hopefully, that will get Office 2003 Service Pack 3 installed.

Suggest you start at the bottom of the WU.log.
Hove the cursor just below the last entry, click Edit, Find.
For Find what: enter FATAL
Under Direction, put a mark next to Up.
Click Find Next.

When you locate the first FATAL error, copy and paste the 5 lines before
and after it into your reply, please.

If the servers aren't swamped again ["PerUpdate" regulated and can NOT
download], Office 2003 SP3 should install at 6:00 PM local time today (27
Aug-08).

Tip: Insert your Office 2003 CD into the appropriate drive bay before the
installation is scheduled to start!
