Windows XP Pro registry enteries

Is it possible to have erroneous enteries in the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEMS\MountedDevices folder of the registry? If so, how
to know which enteries to remove? I believe I have erroneous enteries in the
upper section of this folder. (before the DosDevices enteries) There are
aproximately 50 enteries in the first section of the folder before the
DosDevices enteries. As I study the upper and lower enteries, I notice that
the data in several of the upper enteries do not corrospond to the data in
the lower enteries, and I'm thinking the enteries without corrosponding data
are in error. Is that correct? If so can I delete the enteries without
corrosponding data?

The reason I'm posing this question is because I'm having trouble mounting a
tape backup drive and I'm thinking that Windows is getting confused by bad
enteries.

Thanks in advance.

I would be very careful about editing the registry if your not sure what
you're doing. Always have a backup of the registry also a system restore
point and if possable have an image like Ghost or TrueImage in case
something goes wrong.

Good advice if you're "not sure of what you're doing". I guess if you're
sure of what you're doing, there's no need for an image, system restore point
or backup. Windows is pretty smart and, if you're sure of what you're doing,
it will overlook typos and accidentally deleted registry keys. It's like a
dog; it can smell fear ;)

What are you saying. A person doesn't need a decent backup if they are using
XP? I repair computers for a living and I like (I guess many here) have seen
people come unstuck for all sorts of reasons because they didn't have a
backup. And system restore can and does let people down when needed. And
being sure of what your doing doesn't mean a backup isnt needed. I know what
I am doing but If I dont have a backup I could loose all my created
documents. It easy (if a little time consuming) to reinstall but some data
can't be replced if you dont have a backup.
