Windows XP not recognizing usb printer

I have a Dell photo printer 962 but suddenly Windows XP is not recognizing
it. I downloaded the latest driver and when I try to install it, at the stage
of "detecting the printer", the system doesn't detect the printer and asks me
to connect to the usb port even though it is already connected. Please help

Disconnect the printer, then install the software for it and then reconnect
the printer.

Where did you get the updated driver from? Not the microsoft update site I
hope.

Why did you update the driver? What was wrong with the original? If
nothing, then if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

As this is a Dell product, what did they tell you about the problem?

The reason for the failure to get the latest driver installed is that you
tried to replace the driver while the device was still connected.
The next time, disconnect the device, reboot, and install the updated driver
from Dell. When the installation tells you to connect the printer, do so.
Also, if you got this driver from any source except Dell, you made a big
mistake.

Your problem may not be a bad driver. Instead, it might be a bad port.
